This group of images, the latest in the cycle of pinhole work continues the quest for metaphysical understanding and meaning. Manifestations (2011-12) investigates ideas of time, being, space and substance. Where does the self begin and end? Who and what is transformed through these manifestations and encounters of an inner world of soul and spirit with the external? Spirit comes from life, as essence, as time, as biology. Spirit is that which mediates between the body and the soul.
I choose to work with the pinhole camera because of it’s capacity to capture time as I see it, or more specifically how I experience it, with its inherent dualities. The exposures range from a mere second to many, many minutes- both equally valid of what a moment can be. Moving the shim across the pinhole to allow the light in, for the moment to record on the film has become ritual. Metamorphosis, emergence, un/becoming- ephemeral and primordial- converging realms, supernatural, verging on incorporeal- obsessively seeking.
These images were created in camera with one negative exposed using a large format pinhole camera. The images are hand printed in silver halide and toned. Ten prints are made from each negative. All images are untitled, accompanied by the year the corresponding negative was created.
